ABSTRACT

Technologies for distributed electricity generation include wind, solar, biomass, fuel cells, gas microturbines, hydrogen, combined heat and power, and hybrid power systems [5]. Most wind generators and PV systems use inverters. An inverter converts DC voltage and current into AC voltage and current, via power electronics and microprocessors. The inverter system also provides most of the protective relay functions and automatically synchronizes with the voltage and frequency from the electric grid, eliminating the need for discrete relays for voltage and frequency protection. The power electronics can be used for power factor correction and provide greater flexibility than noninverter systems.
