ABSTRACT

Considering the feedback time delays brought about by WAMS system and the application prospects of STATCOM controllers in China, it is worthy of intensive studies on design of highperformance wide-area STATCOM controllers for interconnected power system in order to damp lowfrequency oscillations which may exist in power system. This paper is based on STATCOM WideAre additional Damping Controller (WADC) of Wide-Area Control Systems (WACSs), expressed as control problem of time delay output feedback. Then, Direct Feedback Linearization (DFL) theory, robust control theory and the state observer are employed for the design of setting controller parameters through free weighting matrices method[7] and pole placement method[8]. Finally, a typical twoarea and four-machine power system is used for system simulation, the results of which show that the designed controller is useful for the damping of low-frequency oscillations of the power system and meanwhile respond to various situations and achieve good stability margin of time delays.
