ABSTRACT: From the year of 2000, lots of researches have focused on the antioxidant activity of polysaccharides of plant, algae or microbial origins, and it seems most of the polysaccharides bear good free radicals scavenging ability in vitro. In the past few years, we also screened the antioxidant ability on some of the polysaccharides of dierent sources, and the IC50 values were in the level of mg/mL, which were consistent with most of the other publications. In this paper, we investigated the in vitro antioxidant activity of the polysaccharides from Cordyceps militaris, the natural polyphenolic compound quercetin, and N-acetylneuraminic acid which distributed widely in cells or particles of mammalians. The results demonstrated that quercetin exhibit much stronger free radicals scavenging activity than the polysaccharides or N-acetylneuraminic acid. Additionally, quercetin could eectively protect HUVEC cells (EA.hy926) under oxidative stress condition. Therefore, our results indicated that polysaccharides may not be a kind of eective antioxidant with great potent application when compared with polyphenolic compound quercetin.
