ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The Sweetwater Authority (Authority) owns and operates the Robert A. Perdue Water Treatment Plant (WTP), and the adjacent source of supply, Sweetwater Reservoir (SWR) in southern San Diego County. In response to the quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) infestation in SWR, ‘rst detected in April 2008, the Authority developed a Dreissenid Mussel Monitoring, Response, and Control Plan (Quagga Plan) in compliance with the California Department of Fish and Game Code 2301. This chapter will describe the development and ef‘cacy of the maincomponents of the Authority’s Quagga Plan, which include a systematic monitoring program, inspection procedures, and methods of control. Chlorine dioxide, ferric salts, and cationic polymer have beeneffective in preventing impacts to WTP operations. In addition, seasonal strati‘cation withhypolimnotic anoxia appears to be limiting the overall severity of infestation in SWR. Perhaps the mostinnovativecontrol strategy evaluated by the Authority was the redear sun‘sh predation study conducted in SWR in 2009-2010.
