ABSTRACT

This chapter presents acoustical characteristics of the Jing, Korean traditional percussion instrument. The spectrogram is utilized to analyze beat phenomenon and the beat of the Jing can be categorized into early beat and late beat. The Jing is a Korean traditional percussion instrument that generates a very unique sound, which is very soft, low tone gliding up, and is playing important roles in Samulnori. Intangible cultural asset brassware maker generally makes the Jing. To analyze Jing sound, spectrogram function from Matlab was used, which is able to freely adjust the resolution in time and frequency. The fundamental frequency of the Jing is 114 Hz and harmonics are precisely maintained integer multiple frequency. The beat of Jing appears to blow and exists till sound fades away. The chapter describes the acoustical characteristics of the Jing by perspective of various blow strengths and drive points.
