ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a noise monitoring system for the health of construction workers using smartphones. Construction workers tend to move contiguously into a construction field, and work within confined work spaces. The chapter presents an approach for identifying and monitoring noise level and developing a safety management system to avoid accidents caused by the noise. Apart from other industries, various crews share identical workspaces in the construction site. According to the accident analysis report from the Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency, construction industry has the highest portion of accidental death as 43.3% among overall industries. Fall, collision and narrowness, are the major reasons which cause fatal accidents. According to the noise regulation, employers should establish hearing safety program where the noise level exceeds 90dB. This regulation might be fit into manufacturing work sites. Smart-phone is used as a device for measuring the noise environment of the construction workers.
