ABSTRACT

When learning or reviewing the criminal justice system, one must lead with the assumption that justice is not blind; justice is not impartial. Detectives, law enforcement, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, jurors, court ocers, and court clerks have pivotal roles within the criminal justice system. Yet, these players operate within the justice system harboring their own biases, life experiences, and prejudices. Inevitably, these biases permeate the justice system when these players operate in the criminal justice system. As a consequence, these biases suggest that Lady Justice peeks. Lady Justice with her blindfold “symbolizes the fair and equal administration of the law” (Gomez, 2005). Nevertheless, her blindfold is lied more times than we want to admit and acknowledge-justice is not blind.
