Only 2.5% of all water on the planet corresponds to surface freshwater (Gleick, 1993). Of the fraction that is extracted for human purposes, about 70% is used for agriculture, 20% by industry (including power generation) and 10% is used for direct human consumption (UNEP, 2011).
