ABSTRACT

At present, the car mode share in most cities is still in the early stage of rapid growth, and the changing is alarming. In 1986, cycling mode share in Beijing was 62.7%, then down to 13.9% in 2012. At the meantime, private car mode share increased from 5% to 32.6%. During 1986 to 2009, car mode share in Shanghai grew rapidly by 17%, whereas cycling mode share dropped by 17.5%. Despite more than 400 kilometers metro system had been built during 2004 to 2009, public transport mode share in Shanghai just grew 0.6%.
