ABSTRACT

The implementation of an ALE formulation for linear and nonlinear elastic materials is done in a straightforward manner. Nonetheless, inelastic material behavior requires additional effort for keeping track of the history of the material particles in the spatially fixed mesh. A general treatment is suggested by (Le Tallec & Rahler 1994), applying a streamline upwind scheme for the numerical solution of the advection-diffusion equations. This approach has been improved (Ziefle & Nackenhorst 2008) by splitting the problem in two parts: a) the evolution of material properties is solved for a temporal snapshot and b) the advection of history material behavior is done in a second step by means of a Time-Discontinuous-Galerking method. The main drawback is that this advection has to be solved in addition to the balance equations at each time step, being necessary to apply a reiteration algorithm to ensure convergence.
