ABSTRACT

Curvularia Krisztina Krizsán,1 Tamás Papp,1 Palanisamy Manikandan,2,3

Members of the genus Curvularia including species formerly classifi ed as Bipolaris spp. in the Cochliobolus Group 2 are melanin-producing dematiaceous fungi. Among them C. australiensis, C. geniculata, C. hawaiiensis, C. lunata and C. spicifera are the species most frequently isolated from clinical samples. These fungi may cause local infections, primarily affecting the respiratory system, the cornea and the skin, in immunocompetent persons and invasive diseases in immunocompromised patients. Infections of the subcutaneous tissue, bone, endocardium and central nervous system have also been described.
