ABSTRACT

Fungal infections can cause high morbidity and mortality, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Identifi cation of the infecting fungal strain and determination of any potential resistance is important for optimal treatment (NollaSalas et al. 1997; Denning et al. 2003; Garey et al. 2006). Timely initiation of optimal therapy is required to successfully treat these infections and additionally it also reduces the overall cost of hospital care (Pappas et al. 2009; Iriart et al. 2012).
