ABSTRACT

Activated carbon (AC) has been described through the years as a unique and versatile material. Its disordered micro-/nanostructure develops a diverse porous structure providing high surface area in small volumes. Aside from these textural parameters, the presence of surface functionalities is a distinctive feature of AC, since it provides the chemical polarity, ion interchange capacity, and surface charge. All these characteristics contribute, or not, to the performance of the carbons for speci c applications.
