ABSTRACT

Anyone who has seen the movie Apollo 13 (Howard, 1995) is familiar with the famous “Failure is Not an Option” scene, that being the phrase uttered by Gene Kranz, the flight director (played by Ed Harris), at the end of a tense discussion. Prior to that quote, an engineer named John (who might as well be a statistician) is able to quickly convince a room full of other engineers, analysts, and managers to take a specific action that ends up helping save the lives of the astronauts in the damaged spacecraft.
