ABSTRACT

Usability Engineering is a user-oriented approach which touches upon how to communicate with users, observe the working environment of users and scenario analysis etc., so as to explore what is good or a usability factor, and to discover the principle of product design for designers to design a product while using a product (Chen, 2001). The ultimate goal of usability is to achieve optimal usability via an understanding of its operation; including high efficiency, easy to learn, easy to memorise, less errors and high satisfaction related

1 INTRODUCTION

Jeweller’s workbench matter to jewellers in terms of overall comfort level and important working environment, and hence the usability of jeweller’s workbench becomes significantly imperative. However, the jeweller’s workbench on the market reports indicate are inconsistent in size and makes users change use habit, or to reform a bureau desk by themselves in order to adapt it for work on the jeweller’s workbench which is inconvenient to use. No manufacturers or designers had conducted further improvement or addressed the usability issue that was closely linked to frequent problems in using the jeweller’s workbench. Therefore this study is to understand the actual needs and operation issues of jewellers about the jeweler’s workbench; it further explores the situation of the

requirements, and enable satisfactory use to different users, which is the so-called optimal usability (Wu, 2002). Usability Engineering has been gradually applied to product review over the years; the study by Lin and Guan introduced a simple evaluation method for usability engineering, proposed by Nielson, to enhance learnability, efficiency of use, memorability, few and non-catastrophic errors and subjective satisfaction and related characteristics in use (Lin and Guan, 2001).
