ABSTRACT

The life images in the past belong to Long-Term Memory (LTM), mental imagery that comes to our mind. In the definition of an environmental image. Kevin Lynch (1960) believes that it is a mental image of an individual’s generalization of the real world. An image, as has been widely accepted in urban environmental studies, is an imagery exploration developed between an environment and one’s own feelings. Norber-Schulz believes that the spirit of a space in which one exists includes its orientation and identification. Norberg-Schulz argues that the spirit of a place is the identification between people, and includes: nature, light, spatial symbols, history, religion, mind, the five senses, etc. While Kevin Lynch defines the image of the city as comprising three elements and the form of an image, Harrison and Howard propose four features of an image: location, appearance, meaning and associations, which include both the internal and external aspects, in opposition to the theory of Kevin Lynch. Based on the points mentioned above, this study comments on the establishment of the Taiwanese cultural images. In sum, the research purposes of this study are as follows:

1. To explore the cultural elements and storytelling skills related to different images of the city.
