ABSTRACT

In the worldwide tour of the giant “Rubber Duck”, the body size of the Rubber Duck is always adjusted according to different cities and locations where it takes up temporary residence for display. Aligning itself with the backdrop in each city, the rubber duck conveys a peaceful and warm image. However, when the Rubber Duck arrived at Hong Kong, the first stop of its tour at Chinese-speaking countries, some changes seemed to take place. The Rubber Duck transformed from a serene and peaceful art sculpture to promotion medium for bustling commercial activities. During its approximately one-month display in Hong Kong, the Rubber Duck not only attracted over eight million spectators but also gave birth to a multitude of peripheral businesses, which centered on the Rubber Duck. Further, the Rubber Duck sensation even swept the entire Taiwan Island, drew the attention of tourists in both northern and southern Taiwan, and become a high-profile figure. In addition to having a large fan base everywhere, the Rubber Duck even has its own webpage, fan clubs, and a variety of spin-off products which are cater to all aspects of people’s lives.
