ABSTRACT

Kroeber and Kluckhohn suggest that when culture is converted from a symbol into a figure, people will realize their outstanding achievement in the daily use items (Yu Zhi-min et al., 1998). Accordingly, lifestyle goods and culture influence each other. Since ancient times, culture and custom have influenced design, while design and technique has created such lifestyle goods (Shi Yan-ping et al., 1994). Later on, lifestyle goods made of bamboo influenced the lives of people in the early days (Skolimowski, 1970) Auguste Comte’s idea of positivism also promotes the law of the three stages, providing many reasons to explain that cultural phenomenon cannot be analyzed by science alone. Instead, qualitative research can offer a more comprehensive perception of culture. To sum up, this study aims to explore: 1. The style, production process, and application of traditional craft in bamboo furniture; 2. The style, production process, and application of modern design in bamboo furniture; 3. The practice of the combination of traditional craft and modern design in bamboo furniture. With these three goals, this study attempts to understand the relationship between traditional craft and modern design in bamboo furniture.
