ABSTRACT
Suspension bridges are constructed where the longest spans are required, and it is not viable to construct intermediate piers. They maximize the use of tension; therefore, an efficient, yet robust, suspension system is a key component. The main cables are essentially catenaries, prestressed by dead weight applied via the suspenders and cable bands and tied at the ends to anchorages, which are typically either rock anchors or large gravity structures.
