ABSTRACT

Recent devastating security hazards brought to focus the need for bridges to implement measures to reduce their harmful effects. Implementing many such measures is very expensive, whether physical or operational measures, and could pose a major problem to bridge owners. Budget limitations in the current environment make this problem even more critical. Due to their symbolic and iconic nature, as well as the high volumes of traffic they carry, risk associated with suspension cable bridges is relatively high and requires good security risk management strategies. The complex nature of the suspension bridges, coupled with higher security threat and location, makes mitigating these threats costlier than for other bridges. This chapter discusses the security of suspension cable bridges in a risk management framework in such a way that it can be expanded to cover all aspects of risk management associated with suspension bridge upkeep.
