ABSTRACT

Introduction Nutritional recommendations are required equally by the sedentary person who is seeking to reduce body fat, by the athlete who is dieting or undergoing deliberate dehydration in an attempt to make a specic weight category, and by the competitor who wishes to maintain health and physical performance in the face of a partial or complete fast because of religious beliefs. The needs of the sedentary person can be summarized quite briey, but in the case of the athlete, we will examine carbohydrate, fat, protein and uid needs in more detail, with specic reference to the intermittent fasting of Ramadan.
