ABSTRACT

Stone rubbing is the practice of creating an image of surface features of a stone on paper and always been used to transfer the calligraphy from stones by Chinese scholars. As a culture carrier and an expression of the ancient Chinese art, the words on the stones are illegible or missing under natural conditions due to corrosion, weathering, oxidation and other causes. So it is meaningful to research the calligraphy on the stone rubbing and even regenerate the missing words with computer technology. Computer calligraphy is also promising, for example, the generation of a particular style of calligraphy, building a digital calligraphy library, calligraphy tutoring systems and so on. Because rubbings calligraphy is a unique art form in China, so the study in western countries is few, but a certain amount of research have been done in many universities and institutes in China such as the China Academic Digital Associative Library. At present, the study of ancient Chinese calligraphy rubbings focused on two main aspects, one is the calligraphy strokes extraction[1][2][3], and the other is the generation of a specific style of calligraphy[4][5][6].
