ABSTRACT

The fitting of scrubbers and the conversion of engines for natural gas entails significant capital costs and technical challenges, as reported in DMA (2012). Therefore, it might only be feasible for newer ships and it is also necessary to take into account that a significant period of off-hire is required for actual fitting out of the necessary systems. Classification societies such as DNV-GL (2014) are involved in technical and economic assessments of the feasibility of such conversions. Engine manufacturers have also shown a keen interest in the conversion of their engines already installed onboard to operate on natural gas, see Nordtun (2012).
