ABSTRACT

An original approach is proposed for VS measurements in highly urbanized area, like Napoli and Ischia island, that is based on the non-linear inversion of group velocities of fundamental-mode Rayleigh waves extracted with the frequency-time analysis from the cross-correlation of synchronous ambient noise recordings at two sites. The obtained VS models reach depths (up to 1.5 km) that are prohibitive for controlled source experiments and allow the definition of the seismic basement for reliable microzoning studies.
