ABSTRACT

The process John Tukey describes above refers to structured data analysis, but the thought applies equally well to our more unstructured scenarios. Exploration is the rst step in using analytics to comprehend what data means. In this chapter, I will try to dene what we mean by exploration in the context of text analytics in general and of Accelerated Discovery in particular. I will then try to provide a general understanding of the practice of exploratory analytics as applied to text and other similar

kinds of data. I will then give some specic examples to help clarify how these principles typically work in practice.
