ABSTRACT

SUMMARY This chapter presents some case studies of state-of-the-art mechatronic systems. The concept of self-powered dynamic systems is discussed and is defined as a system powered by its own excessive kinetic energy, renewable energy, or a combination of both. The particular area of work is the concept of fully or partially self-powered systems or subsystems requiring zero or reduced external energy inputs. Self-powered sensors and actuators, self-powered controls and solar-powered vehicles are explored in association with self-powered dynamic systems. Energy harvesting techniques are addressed in regards to the application to self-powered dynamic systems. Bio-inspired engineering approaches are investigated in the design of efficient dynamic systems with particular reference to energy efficiency and aerial robotics.
