ABSTRACT

This chapter aims at presenting the latest advances in laser scanning technology, that mainly focus on the automation of data processing. Also, some tools and strategies for optimizing the handling of point clouds and their segmentation are also more deeply explained. A review of works focusing on the automation of LiDAR data is presented. Throughout the sections of this chapter, different methodologies for the automatic segmentation of large point clouds and subsequent object recognition are summarized. These approaches are validated in different fields, such as inventory of road infrastructures, urban mapping, or automatic creation of structural models.
