ABSTRACT

Annual precipitation of the North China Plain is around 500-900 mm with features of large annual variation and uneven distribution in a year. Frequent droughts and water scarcity have severely restricted the sustainable development of this important political and economic region of China. The East and Middle Rout of South-to-North Water Transfer Project have been built to mitigate ecological environment deterioration and serious shortage of water in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, Shandong and Huaihe valley. The East Lake Reservoir is one of the plain reservoirs designed for water storage and distribution of the East Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project, which relies on a large pump station with four units for inflow and outflow. For the inflow, the flow pattern in forebay directly affects the efficiency of the pump. While for the outflow, the flow pattern in culvert through the dam is closely relevant with the leakage and structural stability. So the flow patterns in forebay and culvert of the pump station should be tested prior to construction to ensure the smooth operation and efficiency of the pump units in various operating conditions. Meanwhile it is significant for secure and economic engineering operational.
