ABSTRACT

Asphalt mixtures are one of the most frequently used materials in pavement design. There are over 5 million km of roads in Europe, out of which more than 90% are made of bitumen. Approximately 275 million tons of asphalt mixtures were produced in Europe during 2012 (EAPA, 2012). In the United States there are 4.2 million km of roads, and asphalt mixtures make up 93% of these. In the U.S., approximately 500 million tons of asphalt mixtures are produced every year, costing over 30 billion dollars (National Asphalt Pavement Association, 2012). It is therefore essential to pay close attention to their quality and life-time, where the key determinants of these are the actual properties of these asphalt mixtures.
