ABSTRACT

Abundance usually refers to the relative numbers of individuals belonging to different species (Pagel et al. 1991), whereas biomass refers broadly to the material that is part of a living organism (Hames 2009) and is more related to productivity (Hui et  al. 2012). Nevertheless, in plant communities, the definition and identification of individual plants are frequently difficult, and, thus, other measures of abundance such as plant density and percent cover (Chen et al. 2008) and even biomass (Chiarucci et al. 1999) are used. Currently, most ecologists refer to abundance as “some measure of the amount of species” that can be estimated through density, biomass, frequency, or cover (Chiarucci et al. 1999).
