ABSTRACT

The ancient Dragon Cavern’s water treatment instance on the Shepan Island shows us the ancients’ courage to challenge and their extraordinary creativity. The groundwater prevention and treatment technology were invented by the ancients who lived in the South Song Dynasty (about 800 years ago). It mainly comprises 8 technologies: waterproof rock joint with lead strip technology, side wall groove guiding water technology, roof groove guiding water technology, gully hole (pit) collecting water technology, small “earth dam” intercepting water technology, drainage ditch pumping water technology, movable stone gate retaining water technology, and water leakage hole drainage technology (Yang et al. 2014). This paper discusses the principle, implementation method and effect of these technologies, hoping to offer reference for related research.
