ABSTRACT

Historic structures such as man-made stone structures and artifacts, when they are constructed, can be viewed as exposure weathering trials of the stone in local environment (Sharp et al., 1982, Takahashi et al., 1994, Mottershead, 1994, 1998, 2000, Sancho et al., 2003, Yang et al., 2007, Zhang et al., 2011). According to the field measurement data and the weathering time, surface recession and corresponding weathering rate of the stone can be determined. Some excellent examples of this work include Meierding (1993), Mottershead (2000), Inkpen & Jackson (2000), Williams & Robinson (2000), Trudgill et al. (2001), Paradise (2002), Mottershead et al. (2003), Wells et al. (2008), Turkington & Paradise (2005), etc.
