      ABSTRACT

      Weoutline the principles ofmid-infrared vibrational spectroscopy of

      molecular films on a metal surface structured with subwavelength-

      sized geometric features, both self-assembled and fabricated fol-

      lowing electromagnetic design. Molecular chemistry, optical physics,

      and electromagnetic engineering approaches are presented. We

      then review molecular film preparation techniques and substrate

      fabrication technologies specific to surface-enhanced mid-infrared

      spectroscopy.
