ABSTRACT

Trinidad and the smaller Tobago (“T&T”) are small islands that sit between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of South America just northeast of Venezuela (CIA 2014). At just over 1.2 million, the country’s population is comprised of 35% East Indian, 34% African, 15% mixed other, 8% mixed African/East Indian, and 8% other or unspecified (most of whom would be white or of Chinese descent) (CIA 2014). T&T is also religiously diverse, including Protestants (32%), Roman Catholics (22%), Hindus (18%), Muslims (5%), and various others or unspecified (23%) (CIA 2014). The country has enjoyed economic growth thanks to its energy reserves, but inequality remains high.
