ABSTRACT

In the brain, dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter-a chemical released by nerve cells to send signals to other nerve cells. Dopamine is manufactured in nerve cell bodies located within the Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA) and is released in the nucleus accumbens and the prefrontal cortex (Keeler 2014). Dopamine system mainly includes dopaminergic project, and they are neural pathways in the brain that transmit dopamine neurotransmitter from one region of the brain to the other (Fig. 1) (Usher 2002). Dopaminergic nerve cell bodies in such areas as the substantia nigra tend to be pigmented due to the presence of the black pigment melanin. There are eight dopaminergic pathways.
