ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter discusses the relevance of the work of the French philosopher of technology Bernard Stiegler (1952) in addressing technoethical and technopolitical issues in agricultural innovation, in particular, the use of genetic engineering technologies. Before specifically dealing with his work on agriculture and agricultural innovation, I briefly introduce the broader scope of his work and the most important aspects of his views on technology and technological change. I then focus on his theory of agriculture as a technical system as seen from his more encompassing view on the coevolution of humanity and technology. Emphasis is placed on his notion of proletarianization and its effects on farmers and people around the world due to the corporate-controlled deployment
