ABSTRACT

Introduction Gender conjectures thrive in a society’s culture to form beliefs and perceptions, which have become the lens through which the sexes are perceived (Grigsby, 2009). This is the case among the Igbo tribe of south-eastern Nigeria, where land and property rights are hinged on conjectures against the female sex. Even though these conjectures have been created on the basis of false information, they are deeply ingrained in the culture of the Igbos and are commonly reflected in various narratives used to depict the female gender.
