ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The preparing method of onion-based composite was studied in this project. These materials took onion fiber as the base and took tussah silk as the reinforcement. The composite material showed the largest tensile strength when the weight contain of tussah silk is 31.75% and the length of tussah silk is 2 mm. Onion skin contains natural flavonoids that has good antibacterial properties. The ethanol method was adopted in this study for extracting flavonoids from abandoned onion skins, and then made it as the antibacterial agent for the composite materials. The results showed that the best extraction technology was ethanol concentration 60%, extraction time 2 h, extraction temperature 60°C, and ratio of solid to liquid 1:20. After antibacterial finishing, the produced composite showed some antimicrobial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus was better than Escherichia coli.
