ABSTRACT

Lineal Cultural Heritage is one form of Word Heritage, which has canals and roads forms. The “Silk Road” is an important cultural route in China, which maintained the national rule, promoted economy, society, and culture’s exchange. The Xuanquan place is a relay on the Han dynasty’s “Silk Road”, which is used to deliver official documents and military intelligence, or as the place to stay, change horses for government officials on their ways. The Xuanquan relay locates close to the mountain pass. Because of the water flows from high tableland, it was given the name “Suspend Spring”. (Liu, F.C. 2006. Xuanquan…)

2 PROJECT BACKGROUND

2.1 Location

Xuanquan is located in Dunhuang city in Gansu province, and in the Gobi desert 1.5 km south ofAndun road. The distance to Anxi is 56 km, to Dunhuang is 64 km. Huoyan Mountain is at its south, and the Xishawo is at its north. From the site, people could see the Great Wall site of Han dynasty. Xuanquan relay was a transit place in Han and Tang dynasties for the use of receiving and deliver mails, and offer a resting place for people. The name, Xuanquan, came from the Han slips discovered from underground with the written words “Xuanquan Zhi.” Xuanquan is the national key culture unit.
