Splines in Disease Mapping

Smoothing techniques based on splines have been recently incorporated into the disease mapping toolkit as an alternative to the widely used conditional autoregressive (CAR) models. In this chapter, we deal with areal data. Readers interested in alternative smoothing techniques for examining the spatial distribution and variation in disease risk for individual event data are referred to Chapter 10 of this handbook (Hazelton, 2015).
