Background Like citizens in other industrialized countries, Americans are experiencing relatively high levels of growth in prescription drug spending.1 The United States had the highest level ($[USD]985) of per capita spending on prescription drugs in 2011 among the developed countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.2
