ABSTRACT

Two innovative technologies have emerged on the last decade: Big Data and Cloud Computing. On the one hand, Big Data warrants innovative data analytics for a variety of new and existing data, providing real business benefits [4]. Digital traces from people and systems produce every day a massive volume of data collected from actions, sensors, algorithms, and social web. On the other hand, Cloud Computing has the potential to enhance business agility and productivity while enabling greater efficiencies and reducing costs. The convergence of Cloud Computing and Big Data technologies has envisioned to offer a cost-effective delivery model for Cloudbased Big Data analytics. However, this convergence imposes new challenges to the traditional security technologies that may need to be redesigned considering the current security models and tools [9]. In fact, Big Data-sets have made Big Data storage systems attractive targets for cyber attackers, whose goal lies in compromising the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and information. In order to address this new problem and further achieve a secure, available, and reliable Big Data Cloud-based service, we not only present in this chapter the state-of-the-art of Big Data Cloud-based services, but also a novel architecture to manage reliability, availability, and performance for accessing Big Data services running on the Cloud. The architecture is a service offered by the Cloud provider as an outsourcing of firewalling functions, characterized by a high availability, huge and dynamic resource provisioning. Those firewalling functions aim at ensuring a reliable and secure data access, high data availability, and cope with distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks by managing their impacts in the Cloud and tilting the playing field in favor of the defender using network function virtualization technology [7] and Cloud benefits, such as flexibility, elasticity, and on-demand provisioning. This chapter follows several steps, such as the investigation of related works, the architecture design, software developing, testing, and results analysis. Hence, this chapter is organized as follows: introduction; the state-of-the-art; the description of the proposed reliable and secure data access for Big Data Cloud-based service; results from a case study applying the architecture; and conclusions and future work.
