ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some ways in which Avvo has used data to answer its own specific business questions. Fortunately, the business questions Avvo tackles each day are not too different from those that plague lawyers. How do we measure the quality of our services so that we can convey that quality to legal consumers? How do we identify markets of opportunity: legal consumers that need our services but whom we are not reaching? It shares some lessons learned and best practices of collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing legal data. The chapter provides an overview of how data pertinent to legal can be collected and stored. It discusses different ways in which data can be used to improve a legal practice. The chapter also discusses how a legal entity can use data to evaluate lawyer quality, identify markets in which need is great but lawyers scarce, and identify business development leads.
