ABSTRACT

In recent times, medicinal plant research has gained a lot of attention in the scientifi c community. The immense potential of medicinal plants has been already proven by many old traditional therapies such as Ayurveda, Unani and tribal medicines, now these medicinal plants are being identifi ed and screened for their bioactivities by modern scientifi c techniques creating evidence in literature, and contributing to the fi eld of pharmacology (Tapsell et al. 2006, Triggiani et al. 2006, Ahuja et al. 2015). According to World Health Organisation (WHO), about 80% of the daily health care needs are fulfi lled by traditional use of aromatic and medicinal herbs (Chowdhury et al. 2009). Despite numerous developments in the fi eld of medicine and synthetic drug chemistry, medicinal herbs are the precursors of many commonly prescribed drugs and are one of the major sources of raw material for their industrial production.
