ABSTRACT

Significant facial trauma can result in acute lifethreatening situations, permanent disfigurement and disability. Up to 10 per cent of all emergency department visits involve injury to the face. Fortunately, the majority of this facial trauma is relatively minor, with nasal fractures making up approximately 40 per cent of all facial fractures seen. Because of the sensitive cosmetic nature of the face, as well as the major functions undertaken in the foreface, trauma to this area often involves litigation. This necessitates good note keeping and timely clinical care to ensure appropriate outcomes for the patient.
