ABSTRACT

Benign vocal fold lesions are the most common lesions found in the larynx and are responsible for dysphonia that leads to a decrease in quality of life and loss of professional productivity. It has been estimated that approximately 7% miss at least one day of work a year due to hoarseness. Vocal fold nodules are the most common benign lesions of the vocal folds. They are more frequent in boys and women and are commonly diagnosed in those with heavy voice use, either professionally or socially. Classically, vocal fold nodules are described as bilateral and are usually relatively symmetric. Laryngeal examination should include flexible laryngoscopy and rigid or flexible stroboscopy and voicing at different frequencies; however, evaluation at the modal frequency is imperative for proper strobe interpretation of the mucosal wave. Examination will show bilateral masses at the medial surface of the middle of the membranous vocal fold.
