ABSTRACT

Rice, the primary staple for more than half the world's population, is produced worldwide. Most of the rice consumers live in the developing countries. The declining water resources and the reduced share of its availability for agriculture have affected all rainfed rice farmers. It is high time now to save the costly irrigated water and economize its use in agriculture. The traditional concept of continuous submergence is not necessary and optimum yield with minimum water requirement but high water use efficiency can be obtained with intermittent irrigation. Since irrigation water is a scarce commodity in the rainfed farming system, water saving irrigation is drawing gradual attention. Simulation of water balance parameters has been studied by many researchers in low land rice. A water balance simulation model is developed to estimate the different water balance parameters for various treatments of rainfed rice.
