ABSTRACT

The recent several decades have provided outstanding information about glycoconjugates-biopolymers consisting of a carbohydrate (glycan) part covalently linked to protein or lipid. The major types of glycoconjugates are glycoproteins, glycolipids and proteoglycans. These biopolymers have an incredible structural complexity and diversity of the glycan moieties, huge heterogeneity and wide biological roles in living organisms. The addition of mono-or oligosaccharides to proteins and glycolipids is a signifi cant posttranslational modifi cation that modulates the structure and localization of biopolymers (Kannicht 2002).
