ABSTRACT

Task forces have been working to complete research reports that will form the basis for the certification of additional bio-based fuel production pathways. Aviation fuel specifications are used to define the operating limitations for virtually all gas-turbine-powered aircraft in operation today. The original Sasol isoparaffinic kerosene approval in 1999 was used by the aviation fuel community as the basis to develop an alternative aviation fuel qualification process. The original version of drop-in fuel specification (ASTM D7566) includes only one annex that defined the criteria for a Fischer-Tropsch (FT) blending component denoted as Synthesized Paraffinic Kerosene. In July 2011, a second annex was added for hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids. This annex included many of the same requirements as the FT annex. The US Federal Aviation Administration regulations pertaining to aircraft, engines, and aviation fuel were structured to complement the use of industry specifications similar to those issued by ASTM.
