ABSTRACT

Evaluation of dental radiographs starts with appropriate orientation of the image according to established standards. The step in radiographic interpretation is determining which teeth have been imaged. The key to properly identifying the imaged teeth on standard radiographs is the embossed dot, which is near one corner of the film. Interpreting dental radiographs starts with the appropriate orientation. Determining the approximate age and size of a patient, as well as defining the exact tooth, are helpful in forensic medicine and in evaluation of rescued or found animals. Another situation was a request from the police department to determine the age of a German shepherd dog that had been offered for sale as a supposedly young animal – approximately 1 year of age. Deciduous teeth differ significantly from permanent teeth. Based on radiographs, some information about the size of the animal is available.
